The History of Mr. Ding -A-Ling Ice Cream

February 1973.
Mr. Ding-A-Ling Ice Cream was founded by Brian Collis in February of 1973. At a young age, Brian started with a single truck, driving around the Latham area during the spring and summer months, offering ice cream for just 25 cents. Local residents quickly embraced the convenience of mobile ice cream, enjoying a wide range of premium, pre-packaged frozen treats from Blue Bunny and Good Humor. From fudge bars and popsicles there was something for everyone.
As time went on, Brian established a regular route, with customers eagerly waiting for the familiar sound of the truck’s iconic musical jingle. His business grew steadily, expanding into Albany, Cohoes, Watervliet, and beyond. Later, he added more trucks to his fleet and pioneered a new trend: mobile ice cream catering for events.
While food trucks may be common today, the idea of an ice cream caterer was groundbreaking at the time. Mr. Ding-A-Ling Ice Cream quickly became the go-to ice cream vendor for weddings, large events like Alive at Five, field days at local schools, and ice cream socials at universities such as Siena College, SUNY schools, and corporate gatherings for companies like Albany Medical Center, Regeneron, and General Electric.

Growing up in Latham, brothers Luke and Jared Van Der Veer have vivid memories of racing to the ice cream truck after dinner, eager to grab their favorite frozen treats. Luke was always drawn to the sweet, tangy Screwball, while Jared couldn’t resist the bright, colorful Cyclone.
In 2023, the two brothers decided to turn those childhood memories into a business venture of their own, purchasing Mr. Ding-A-Ling Ice Cream and diving in headfirst. They quickly familiarized themselves with the operations, carefully crafting a growth plan for the future.
Today, Mr. Ding-A-Ling Ice Cream is the largest provider of ice cream truck catering services in New York, Massachusetts, and Vermont, continuing to deliver sweet memories to communities across the region.
